History

Florence and the Machine are an English indie rock band that formed in 2007, consisting of vocalist Florence Welch, keyboardist Isabella Summers, and a collaboration of other artists. Florence and the Machine's style has been described as dark, robust and romantic. Their music is a mix of classic soul, pop, baroque arrangements and English art rock.

The name of Florence and the Machine is attributed to Florence Welch's teenage collaboration with Isabella "Machine" Summers. Welch and Summers performed together for a time under the name Florence Robot/Isa Machine. The name started off as a private joke that got out of hand.

Lungs

The debut album by Florence and the Machine, released on 3 July 2009. Big, bold, and baroque, "Lungs" thrives on drama. Built around the effortless sweep of Florence Welch's voice and the delicate trills of the harp, it proudly lays its emotions bare, barreling between suffocating lust, debilitating fear and the pain of heartbreak.

How Big, How Blue, How Beautiful

The third album by Florence and the Machine, released on 29 May 2015. In comparison to their last two efforts, the album is much more refined instrumentally and incorporates a mixture of musical influences such as folk, blues and gospel. Lush arrangements combine a rock band, strings, and brass with Welch’s volcanic, soaring voice, serving high drama on tracks.

High as Hope

The fourth album by Florence and the Machine, released on 29 June 2018. The album was executively produced by Florence Welch herself, along with Emile Haynie. "High as Hope" features more minimalist, stripped-down productions, and explores themes of heartache, family, and finding comfort in loneliness. Such lyrical heft affords the band a chance to explore a more delicate, restrained sound, but there’s still space for Welch to blow the roof off.
